As a young person, I became fascinated with graffiti-style drawing and lettering. At first it was about creating something that had my signature — something people could recognize. But underneath that was a deeper desire: to master a craft and belong to a community of creators. Looking back, I realize I was learning one of the foundations of leadership: people gather around distinctive expressions of vision. Before you can lead others, you have to develop a voice of your own.
